4th Dan Demo by Deborah Maizels (1992) - Henka-waza and Jiyu-waza. Uke: Anette Schiferl Saito Sensei defined Henkawaza in this way "Henkawaza are techniques that are modified midstream to suit changed circumstances. If the technique is going smoothly, and you then change to something else, it is not a henkawaza." [from Aikido Journal]

A very revealing example of errors in the basic steps. The first is the sliding step in aikido without taking off the toes of the front foot and the heel of the back foot. Second - at the moment of stepping forward, you can not straighten the knee in front of the standing leg. Thirdly, the step forward should be short, half the width of the foot, a wide step leads to the separation of the foot from the floor. Fourth, centralization means that the height of your center should neither go up nor down. Fifth, after turning in place, the weight of the body should fall more on the front leg, and not on the back.
👍🏾
can you share the list of materials?
Yes... that is how you combat roll :-)
I think this is a really great demo of the myriad things that can be applied when plan A gets stuck! Very nice, and power without brutality.
Good practice for when you are locked up in your home!
Great video! Love the funky soundtrack :)
good
Freakin Awesome!!!!
Just gorgeous. Thank you.
Thank you, this was very useful. Is it normal to use your non-rolling hand to brace yourself at the beginning of the roll? It seemed like he was going to brace himself but then keeps his hand away from touching the mat.
It's just simple, even I can do that
Your not rolling properly
That's well cool! I can do it forward but not forward to backward!
xD is it possible that I cant do this moviment in the second Aikido class????
nice flow!
ushiro katen nice
Thank you for this videos in slow speed. It´s very helpful.
the one i do is differen. im a white belt, so that's probably why. started this year. i do it like this. i sit, then i swing my legs over my shoulder, then i end up in a push up position.
you rock mr.branson
When starting in a seated position and rolling back, you may not have enough momentum to be able to roll back and stand up without using your forward arm to help push you up. When you start the roll from a standing position, you usually do have enough momentum.
Will ask our video guy if he can do that. We'll let you know.
Frozeal: You're correct. The head is not supposed to touch the mat at any time. And in a right-side forward roll, the back meets the mat as you describe. So glad these videos are helping you as you begin your study of Aikido!
The idea behind this training exercise is to challenge your balance and concentration. At a basic level, we usually practice the forward roll from a static position. This exercise lets students practice moving into the roll from a moving position.
This is a warm-up practice that helps to loosen the back and to work on moving the hips into position.
We emphasize maintaining a circular posture with the arms throughout the forward roll. When doing a forward roll with the right foot forward, this would mean lightly holding the right hand in position with the left hand. This helps to maintain the circle of the arm posture even as you come out of the roll. There are different ways to practice forward rolls, this is only one of them. Thanks for your interest in our videos!
